Steve in an Improvisation at John Weber Gallery, NY

Some great footage from the 70's of Steve with other movers doing contact improv. I'd like to try some of these :)

  1. Wow! All I kept saying aloud when I watched this was, "Oh my gosh!!" In my improv class we've played around a little with contact improv, however no one got THIS gutsy! The dancers in the video must have really trusted eachother to run and jump with the faith that they will be caught. I can definitely see how this relates to your piece you performed in class! I couldn't stand the voice in the video, though! Haha It was really neat to hear what he had to say, but really? Not something I would want to listen to for very long!

  2. Jennie,

I agree it takes a lot of trust to improv this way. A lot of trust not only in your partner but in yourself as well. Steve Paxton talks a lot about working with and honoring the body you have. If you know your weaknesses, you are skilled at falling and know how to protect yourself, it is much easier to take these risks. It gets a lot more fun with a high level of trust!

    Thanks for reading,

About Rachel

I am currently a senior at UWM in the dance program. I'm working toward a BA in dance and a Minor in somatics. After graduation, I hope to be work toward a clinical doctorate in physical therapy. I am extremely interested in the cross over of dance, somatics, and physical therapy. When it comes to dance, I have a need to create. For this reason I love improvisation, and even simply choreographing. I think creation is the greatest gift a person has to give the world, especially art. I have a great love and appreciation for all art forms. I believe that no art from is independent from any other art from. Rather, music, dance, and visual art, are all constantly feeding off of one another and inspiring new work.
